I truly believe that if you stop learning you die.
Learning is evolution
We are evolved from apes (actually it is not so true, but it is easier to say that). So one day an ape (let’s call him Joe) decided that it is great to walk straight on legs. Joe tried, it was hard, but he overcome the difficulties and now we are walking straight on our legs, we can run, swim, dance, play football and do a lot of funny things. Thanks Joe!
Then Joe decided that it would be great to have fire on a daily basis. Fire helped him to cook the food (which he learned how to do), to stay warm and to fight with aggressive animals. After making fire there was a lot of efforts to learn something new and now we have cars, ships, planes, iPhones, Internet and other great things that make our life better. Thanks Joe!
Learning is essential for living and it brings a lot of fun to our lives.
Learning vs Practice
I’ve read a lot of articles which tell ‘stop learning — start doing’ and so on. I am partly agree with that. I’m agree that experience can teach you more than a thousands of books, but there are some situations when preliminary learning is essential. For example if you want to drive a car, assist in an open-heart surgery or take part in spaceship launch it is much better to learn first something about it.
On the other side, I did a lot of things that I had no idea about when started to do them. I learned in process. It was hard but also fun. Now I can speak Polish, know some things about web development and logistics, and I’m totally not afraid to start doing something new. My advice is to make preliminary research and then decide if you need firstly learn about it or you can learn in progress.
So go and learn something new. And don’t be afraid to look stupid at the beginning. You are learning, it’s normal. I wanted to learn how to write blogposts, that’s why I wrote this.
Now it’s your turn. Go and learn something new.
